6 ASHI Quarterly Third Quarter 2015 I am pleased to report that the ASHI board had a very productive summer Importantly, the Board was engaged in strategic thinking during the past few months and had a full- day strategic planning meeting on June 20, 2015 as summarized below Highlights from the ASHI Strategic Planning Meeting Background Association Headquarters, Inc (AH) was engaged to facilitate ASHI's 2015 strategic planning session in Philadelphia on June 20, 2015 AH assigned Chief Executive Relationship Officer and Partner Michael Dwyer, CAE, as the facilitator for the session with assistance from AH Account Executive, Melissa Baldwin, CAE In preparation for this session, AH reviewed prior surveys and member feedback for input that would be beneficial to the strategic planning process AH then conducted a new survey of the ASHI membership, ASHI leadership, and our young technologist members to gather further input The survey included questions gauged at measuring the impact on ASHI of 50+ key trends from the American Society of Association Executives' Designing Your Future: Key Trends, Challenges and Choices Facing Associations and Nonprofit Leaders Additionally, through the survey, stakeholders were asked questions for input on ASHI's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) Mike and Melissa also conducted industry research, met on multiple occasions with Kathy Miranda, CAE, ASHI's Executive Director, and Deb Dupnik, ASHI's Assistant Executive Director, to discuss the current "state of ASHI" as well as progress being made on the 2012 strategic plan Currently, the organization is challenged by a number of issues, including capitalizing on existing relationships with similar or related organizations, attracting and retaining new and younger members to ASHI, providing more robust content to members via the ASHI website and ASHI University, finding new funding sources, and maintaining relevance in their relationships with government regulators An ASHI "Voice of the Customer" summary was also provided for review, which included information gleaned from the 2013 membership survey Methodology Working with ASHI staff and board, a multi-phase approach to developing ASHI's strategic plan for 2015 was developed • Phase I was to identify and survey key stakeholders as described earlier • Phase II was to collect and analyze all data received from the stakeholder feedback and identify key focus areas for 2015 and beyond • Phase III was a facilitated full-day strategic planning session with the ASHI Board of Directors in Philadelphia on June 20, 2015 • Phase IV was a formal report and summary of outcomes and recommendations to the ASHI Board of Directors and staff Overview of the Findings Core Values: Core values define ASHI's culture and serve as guiding principles for our organization After much discussion, the board identified the following six vital and timeless core values for ASHI, with the first being the highest priority 1 Education 2 Expertise 3 Leadership 4 Engagement 5 Collaboration 6 Patient Advocacy and Service President's Column Malek Kamoun, MD, PhD E D I T O R I A L AH reviewed prior surveys and member feedback for input that would be beneficial to the strategic planning process.
